Karriêre Scarlett wist mei trije jier al dat se aktrise wurde woe en mei acht jier gie hja al nei films foar folwoeksenen ta, sa as The Silence of the Lambs. Har trochbraak kaam mei har rol yn de The Horse Whisperer (1998) dy't tige posityf beoardiele waard en in protte omtinken foar har opsmiet.
2003: trochbraak as folwoeksen akteur Mei har rol fan 'Gryt' yn Girl with a Pearl Earring waard 2003 it jier fan Johanssons grutte trochbrekken. Hja waard hast unanym priizge foar de twa rollen yn dat jier en waard doe ek foar it earst sjoen as sekssymboal. Sy spile neist Bill Murray yn Lost in Translation. Sûnt hat hja alle jierren yn ien of mear filmrollen te sjen west en oars ek net út it nijs west, sawol privee as saaklik.
Sjongster Yn 2008 brocht Johansson in studioalbum út mei covers fan Tom Waits. Oan it album diene ek David Bowie en Yeah Yeah Yeahs gitarist Nick Zinner mei. It album krige positive- mar ek mindere kritiken. De earste single fan it album is Falling Down.
