It skaai Chalcophaps waard yn 1843 yntrodusearre troch de Ingelske ornitolooch John Gould. De skaainamme kombinearret it Aldgrykske khalkos, itjinge "brûns" betsjut, en phaps, dat "do" betsjut. De typesoarte is de gewoane smaragddo (Chalcophaps indica).
