Leben Ihre Karriere begann die in Mexiko-Stadt und an der Columbia University. In den 1950er- und 1960er-Jahren war sie 20 Jahre am National Hospital in London tätig, danach nahm sie eine Stelle am Institut für Psychiatrie (IOP) zuletzt als Senior Lecturer am King’s College London an. Hier war sie bis zu ihrer Pensionierung im Jahre 1990 tätig. Ihre klinischen Beurteilungen und ihr breites Spektrum an wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten wurden von ihren Kollegen und dem wegweisenden Internationalen Neuropsychologischen Symposium, dessen prominentes Mitglied sie war, geschätzt. Sie verfasste auch den psychologischen Teil des Gutachtens über Augusto Pinochet („Der General weist schwere geistige Verfallserscheinungen auf, die weit über das für sein Alter übliche Maß hinausgehen“), das der britische Innenminister Jack Straw zum Anlass nahm, der Freilassung von Pinochet zuzustimmen.„Geistiger Verfall“. Werk Sie gehörte zu dem Gründungskomitee der British Neuropsychiatry Association (BNPA), die am 30. Oktober 1987 im Institut für Psychiatrie (IOP) gegründet wurde. Ziel der Vereinigung war es, den interdisziplinären Austausch über klinische und akademische Fragen von gemeinsamem Interesse für Fachkräfte aus den Bereichen Neurologie, Psychiatrie und Neuropsychologie sowie für Angehörige verwandter Berufe zu fördern. In das Gründungskomitee wurden gewählt: William Alwyn Lishman (Vorsitzender), Jonathan Bird (Sekretär), Mary Robertson (Schatzmeisterin), Ted Reynolds (Neurologie) und Maria Wyke (Neuropsychologie). Sie veröffentlichte Beiträge zu einer Vielzahl neuropsychologischer Themen. Ihre Hauptwerke bezogen sich auf die Aphasie und den Dysgrammatismus, aber auch auf Geschlechtsunterschiede bei Legasthenie oder auf die Gedächtnisfunktion bei Kindern mit Spina bifida und operiertem Hydrocephalus. Mit Simon Baron-Cohen veröffentlichte sie eine Arbeit über Synästhesie. Auch publizierte sie über senile Demenz.
