Dit was die eerste Oscar-aand wat op televisie gebeeldsend is, en die eerste seremonie wat tegelykertyd in Hollywood en New York gehou is.
Groot omstredenheid het die wenners van die prys vir beste rolprent omhul: die gunsteling, High Noon, het verloor teen Cecil B. DeMille se The Greatest Show on Earth. Laasgenoemde word nou beskou as een van die swakste prente wat nog ’n Oscar gewen het.
The Bad and the Beautiful het vyf pryse gewen – die meeste wat nog gewen is deur ’n prent wat nie vir beste rolprent benoem is nie. Dit was ook die laaste keer ooit dat die beste rolprent net twee Oscars kon wen. Shirley Booth was die laaste mens wat in die 19de eeu gebore is wat ’n Oscar vir beste akteur gewen het.
