Leben und Wirken Harold C. Conklin studierte ab 1943 Anthropologie an der University of California, Berkeley und legte dort 1950 die Bachelor-Prüfung ab. Zwischen 1944 und 1946 leistete er Kriegsdienst bei der US Army und wurde auf den Philippinen stationiert. Hieraus ergaben sich später nachfolgende ethnologische Feldforschungen auf den dortigen Inseln Mindoro und Luzon bei den indigenen Völkern, die er für die Anfertigung seiner Dissertation nutzte. Seine Promotion zum Ph.D. erfolgte 1955 an der Yale University. Anschließend begann er seine Tätigkeit als Hochschullehrer, zunächst an der Columbia University. Im Jahre 1962 übernahm er dann eine Professur an der Yale University, die er bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1996 innehatte. Conklin beschäftigte sich u. a. auch mit der Ethnobotanik und der Ökologie. Seine umfangreiche ethnographische Sammlung mit Bezug auf die Philippinen vermachte er dem American Museum of Natural History. Von 1974 bis 1996 war Conklin außerdem Kurator für Anthropologie am Peabody Museum of Natural History, dessen Sammlung er stark erweiterte. Im Jahre 1976 wurde Conklin Mitglied der American Academy of Arts and Sciences und der National Academy of Sciences.
