Als Dozent lehrte er anschließend an der School of Oriental and African Studies der University of London. 1964 wechselte er an die University of Sussex. Im Jahre 1971 nahm er eine Professur an der University of California, San Diego an und lehrte dort bis zu seinem Eintritt in den Ruhestand 1995. 1976 wurde er als Mitglied in die American Academy of Arts and Sciences berufen.
