Neis promovierte 1988 an der University of Toronto im Fach Soziologie und ist ehemalige Präsidentin der Canadian Association for Research on Work and Health. Sie forscht seit über 20 Jahren in multidisziplinären Teams zu sozialen, gesundheitlichen und ökologischen Veränderungen in küstennahen und maritimen Regionen Kanadas.
