Die 78ste Oscar-toekenningsaand is op 5 Maart 2006 deur die Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood gehou om erkenning te gee aan die rolprente van 2005. Jon Stewart was die aanbieder.
Ang Lee se drama Brokeback Mountain het die meeste benoemings gekry (8). Crash, Good Night, and Good Luck en Memoirs of a Geisha het elk ses benoemings gehad.
Die seremonie is gekenmerk deur die benoeming van baie onafhanklike prente met ’n klein begroting. Baie nuusorganisasies het dit die "Gay Oscars" gedoop omdat prente soos Brokeback Mountain, Capote en Transamerica prominente gay of transgender-karakters ingehad het en almal sterk kandidate vir die beste prent, akteur en aktrise was. Die onderwerp van ander benoemde prente het ook gefokus op omstrede politieke en sosiale temas, soos rasseverhoudings en rassisme (Crash) en terrorisme en sluipmoorde (Munich, Syriana).
Daar was taamlike omstredenheid omdat Crash die Oscar vir beste prent gewen het terwyl Brokeback Mountain die gunsteling was en in die aanloop tot die Oscar-aand meer ander pryse gewen het. Albei prente het drie Oscars gewen, so ook Memoirs of a Geisha en King Kong.
Die Suid-Afrikaanse prent Tsotsi het die Oscar vir beste buitelandse rolprent gewen.
