Leben und Wirken Douglas W. Allen studierte Wirtschaftswissenschaft bzw. Betriebswirtschaftslehre an der Simon Fraser University. Dort legte er 1983 die Bachelor- und 1984 die Magisterprüfung ab. Von 1982 bis 1988 arbeitete er als Lehrassistent an der Simon Fraser University und an der University of Washington. In der letztgenannten Hochschule promovierte er 1988 zum Ph.D. Bis 1990 war er zunächst Assistenzprofessor an der Carleton University. Anschließend wechselte er als Hochschullehrer an die Simon Fraser University. Dort hat er seit 1999 eine ordentliche Professur für Wirtschaftswissenschaft inne. Gastprofessuren im Europa und Neuseeland kamen hinzu, mehrmals lehrte er an der University of Canterbury.
Douglas W. Allen arbeitet vor allem auf dem Gebiet der "Theorie der Verfügungsrechte" ("property rights") und der Transaktionskosten.
