Leben und Wirken Sally Falk Moore studierte Rechtswissenschaft und legte 1945 ihre Bachelorprüfung an der Columbia Law School ab. Als Juristin nahm sie an den Nürnberger Prozessen teil und war anschließend als Rechtsanwältin in New York tätig. Außerdem führte sie ihr Studium an der Columbia University fort und widmete sich vor allem der Ethnologie. 1957 promovierte sie an dieser Universität zum Ph.D. Sie beschäftigte sich zunächst mit dem Volk der Inka. Von 1963 bis 1977 war sie als Hochschullehrerin an der University of Southern California tätig und bis 1981 an der University of California, Los Angeles. Gastprofessuren hatte sie während dieser Zeit an der Yale University (1975/76) und der Harvard University (1978) inne. Seit 1968 führte sie mehrere rechtsethnologische Feldforschungen in Afrika durch. Im Jahre 1981 wurde sie Professorin an der Harvard University und lehrte dort sowohl Ethnologie als auch Rechtswissenschaft. Einer ihrer Studenten dort war der spätere US-Präsident Barack Obama.
