Leben und Wirken Richard M. Dorson studierte Amerikanische Geschichte an der Harvard University. 1933 erwarb er dort den Bachelor- und 1940 den Magistergrad. Seine Promotion zum Ph.D. erfolgte 1943. Als Hochschullehrer arbeitete er kurze Zeit (1943/44) an der Harvard University, anschließend an der Michigan State University. Nach einem Forschungsaufenthalt in Japan (1956/57) übernahm er dann eine Professur an der Indiana University Bloomington. Dorson beschäftigte sich intensiv mit der Volkskunde in den USA und in Großbritannien, mit der Geschichte dieses Faches und der Volksliteratur. Hierüber legte er zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen vor. Er war Herausgeber des „Journal of American Folklore“ (1957 bis 1962) und des „Journal of the Folklore Institute“ (ab 1962). Er gehörte der American Folklore Society an und war von 1966 bis 1968 deren Präsident.
