Macrothelidae bilden eine Familien innerhalb der Ordnung der Webspinnen und zählen zur Unterordnung der Vogelspinnenartigen. Von Hedin et al. (2018) von den Röhrenvogelspinnen ausgegliedert und in den Rang einer Familie erhoben, was durch Kulkarni et al. (2023) bestätigt wurde.
Merkmale Die Familie kann von anderen Vogelspinnenartigen anhand stark vergrößerten hinteren Dellen im Sternum und einer einzelnen Reihe größerer Zähne auf dem vorderen Rand sowie kleinerer Zähne der Cheliceren unterschieden werden.
Verbreitung Vertreter dieser Familie sind bekannt aus Afrika, Asien und Teilen Europas (Spanien, Italien und Griechenland).
