Es ist eine erheblich erweiterte Ausgabe seines zwei Jahre zuvor erschienenen Werkes L’histoire naturelle des estranges poissons marins. 1555 folgte unter dem Titel La nature & diuersité des poissons eine Übersetzung ins Französische.
Werk Der Oktavband im Querformat De aquatilibus, Libri duo. Cum eiconibus ad viuam ipsorum effigiem, quoad eius fieri potuit, expressis wurde bei Charles Estienne gedruckt. Das in zwei „Bücher“ unterteilte Werk besteht aus 448 nummerierten Seiten und ist mit 187 Holzschnitten von Pierre Gourdelle (um 1530–um 1588) illustriert. Die meisten Holzschnitte sind ganzseitig. Die „Bücher“ umfassen 16 bzw. 12 Kapitel.
Das Werk ist Odet de Coligny, dem Kardinal von Châtillon, gewidmet.
Inhalt Im ersten „Buch“ behandelt Belon im Wasser lebende Tiere „mit Blut“, also im Wasser lebende Wirbeltiere (Vertebrata), das zweite handelt von im Wasser lebenden Tieren „ohne Blut“, also im Wasser lebenden Wirbellose (Invertebrata), wie beispielsweise Kraken (Octopoda), Zehnfußkrebse (Decapoda), Perlboote (Nautilidae), Schnecken (Gastropoda) und Muscheln (Bivalvia). Für die weitere Unterteilung zieht Belon Eigenschaften wie die Art der Fortpflanzung (lebendgebärend, eierlegend), die Körperform, den Aufbau des Skeletts (z. B. Knorpel, Knochen) und das bewohnte Habitat heran.
Für Belon war die eigene Naturbeobachtung eine unabdingbare Voraussetzung für die Darstellung von Lebewesen. Er korrigierte in seinem Werk die Schriften klassischer Autoren wie Aristoteles und Plinius. Belon zitierte häufig aus Oppians Lehrgedicht Halieutika (Über den Fischfang).
