Blousoetbessies kom van Soedan tot Namibië en Suid-Afrika in verskeie vorme en ondersoorte voor. Die ondersoort cathartica in Suid-Afrika en Mosambiek. Dit is 'n struik of boompie met lang sigsag-takke. Blomme, in klein klompies, is manlik of vroulik, gewoonlik op dieselfde plant. Hulle is groenerig geel. Die vrugte is eiervormig of rond, rooi-pers of swart.
