Gonatas is een geslacht van kevers uit de familie van de Passalidae. De wetenschappelijke naam van het geslacht is voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1871 door Johann Jakob Kaup. "Monographie der Passaliden" in Berliner entomologische Zeitschrift vol. 15 (1871), blz. 50
Deze kevers komen voor in Australië en de eilanden tussen Australië en Java. "An account of the Oriental Passalidae (Coleoptera), based primarily on the collection in the Indian Museum." Memoirs of the Indian Museum vol. 3 (1914) blz. 299
In 1882 gebruikte William Lucas Distant de naam Gonatas voor een nieuw geslacht van wantsen uit het Neotropisch gebied. De naamgeving van Kaup had hierop echter voorrang. James A.
