Dean Koontz, folút: Dean Ray Koontz (Everett (Pennsylvania), 9 july 1945), is in wrâldferneamde Amerikaanske skriuwer fan thrillers en horrorferhalen. Ien fan syn boeken is fertaald yn it Frysk, ntl. De Fizioenen fan Mary (orizjinele titel: The Vision), dat oerset is troch Henk Wolf.
Biografy Koontz groeide op yn in gesin dêr't syn alkoholistyske heit him geregeldwei mishannele, wat in grutte ynfloed op syn lettere skriuwen hie, krekt as de moed fan syn ûnmânske mem yn har ferset tsjin syn heit. Yn syn studintetiid begûn Koontz syn skriuwkarriêre en al rillegau wûn er syn earste priis (yn in skriuwwedstryd fan it tydskrift Atlantic Monthly).
Nei't er yn 1967 ôfstudearre wie, wurke er as learaar Ingelsk oan in middelbere skoalle yn Mechanicsburg. Yn syn frije tiid skreau er syn earste roman, Star Quest, in science fictionferhaal dat yn 1968 útjûn waard. Nei noch in stikmannich oar science fictionromans skreaun te hawwen, stapte er oer nei thrillers en horror. Koontz wie fral yn 'e jierren santich in tige produktyf skriuwer; yn syn topjier 1972 kamen der bgl. njoggen boeken fan him út.
Yn 'e jierren santich en tachtich makke er ek in soad gebrûk fan pseudonimen, mei't syn útjouwer tsjin him sein hie dat skriuwers dy't hinne en wer sprongen tusken ferskillende literêre sjenres, sa't hy dat die, it risiko rûnen om harren lêzers fan har te ferfrjemdzjen. Nei al mear as tsien jier skreaun te hawwen, briek Koontz yn 1980 einlik (ûnder syn eigen namme) troch mei de roman Whispers (fan 'e beide foargeande boeken, The Key to Midnight en The Funhouse wiene ek al mear as in miljoen eksimplaren ferkocht, mar dy wiene ûnder in pseudonym skreaun).
Fan Koontz is bekend dat er polityk konservatyf is en in oanhinger fan 'e Republikeinen. Sa stipe er yn 2008 aktyf en finansjeel de kampanje fan 'e Republikeinske presidintskandidaat John McCain. Koontz wennet yn 'e omkriten fan Los Angeles, yn Kalifornje, dêr't ek syn measte romans spylje.
