The Eppensteiner were a medieval noble family that produced multiple Dukes of Carinthia and are regarded as the first native ducal dynasty of the Duchy of Carinthia.
Overview
The Austrian Bildeschild (English: Austrian Shield) with its red-white-red colors, is transitionally associated with the Eppensteiners feudal banner. When the family become extinct in 1122, its hereditary possessions together with their banner, passed to the Meinhardiner family of Carinthia and to the Traungau dynasty of Styria. After the Taingau line died out in 1192, these possessions and traditions passed over to the Babenbergs, the dukes of Austria.
