Hugh Watson (20 August 1882 – 1956) was a Scottish footballer best known for his spell at Celtic.
Early life Watson was born in Maybole on 20 August 1882 to William Watson and Agnes (née Campbell).
Celtic career Watson joined Celtic from Junior side Trabboch Thistle in May of 1901 at the age of 18, but did not make his debut until September of that year in a 3–0 win over Clyde in the Glasgow Cup.
Initially signed by Willie Maley to play as a half-back, he went on to hold down a berth in the Celtic team as a right-back, his "all action" style of play winning fans over even if his initial inexperience led to mistakes.
Watson played for Celtic in the 1902 Scottish Cup final, which they lost to Hibernian. He missed their triumph in 1904 due to a broken leg suffered in a 4–3 defeat to Airdrieonians in January of that year, an injury that commentators of the time said ended his hopes of a call up to the Scotland National Team.
His final appearance for Celtic came in 1906 as Celtic defeated Hearts to win the second of what would eventually be six successive league titles at the beginning of the 20th century.
Later life and death In 1910, at the age of 28, Watson and his wife Helen (née McClelland) emigrated to Canada, where he died in Hamilton, Ontario in 1956.
