India competed at the 2022 Commonwealth Games at Birmingham, England from 28 July to 8 August 2022. It was the country's 18th appearance at the Commonwealth Games.
The Indian contingent consisted of 210 athletes competing in 16 sports. Field hockey player Manpreet Singh and badminton athlete P. V. Sindhu served as the country's flagbearers during the opening ceremony. Boxer Nikhat Zareen and paddler Sharath Kamal served as the flagbearers during the closing ceremony.
Indian won 60 medals including 21 gold, 16 silver, and 23 bronze medals, and was ranked fourth in the overall medall table. Sharath Kamal was the most successful athlete, winning three gold and a silver medal in table tennis.
Background Following a decision by the executive board of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) in June 2019 to back the Birmingham Organising Committee for the 2022 Commonwealth Games's proposal to exclude archery and shooting from the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Narinder Batra proposed that India boycott the 2022 Games, claiming the CGF leadership had an "India bashing mindset" and that "people with a particular mindset" could not tolerate India's sporting prowess (as India had performed historically well in these sports).
The IOA later withdrew its boycott threat, and proposed hosting the archery and shooting events separately in Chandigarh in January 2022. The proposal was backed by the CGF on condition that India shall bear the entire cost of hosting the event, and the medals awarded in these events would be included in the overall medal table a week after the closing ceremony of the 2022 Games. However, the plan was scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In October 2021, Hockey India withdrew the Indian men's and women's hockey teams from the Games, citing the risk of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom and the proximity of the 2022 Commonwealth Games to the 2022 Asian Games (which also served as the qualifiers for 2024 Summer Olympics). The decision was made in response to the UK's non-recognition of Indian COVID-19 vaccination certificates and England Hockey withdrawing from the 2021 Men's FIH Hockey Junior World Cup in Bhubaneswar. However, following discussions with the IOA and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, the federation announced that India would, subject to qualification, participate in the Commonwealth hockey tournaments.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games is the 21st edition of the Commonwealth Games and was held in Birmingham, England, from 28 July to 8 August 2022. India made its Commonwealth Games debut at the 1934 edition, and the 2026 Games marked the country's 18th appearance at the Commonwealth Games. Field hockey player Manpreet Singh and badminton athlete P. V. Sindhu served as the country's opening ceremony flagbearers. Boxer Nikhat Zareen and paddler Sharath Kamal served as the flagbearers during the closing ceremony.
Competitors In July 2022, IOA named an Indian contingent consisting of 210 athletes competing across 16 sports. The final Indian contingent consisted of 106 men and 104 women. Fourteen year old squash player Anahat Singh became the youngest Indian athlete to compete at the Commonwealth Games.
