Freija (also spelled Freïja) is a historic village near Taroudant in the Souss-Massa region of southern Morocco. The settlement is known for its traditional architecture and historic fortified structures, including the remains of a 16th-century sultanic fortress and the later Kasbah of Caïd Nasser Ben Ali, which was eventually restored and converted into Riad Freija.

History Freija is an old settlement situated in the Souss Valley near Taroudant. The historic village developed as a compact settlement on elevated ground and preserves elements of traditional southern Moroccan architecture.

The area contains architectural remains from several periods of Moroccan history. Among the oldest major structures are the remains of a sultanic fortress dating from the 16th century. This fortress predates the later Kasbah of Caïd Nasser Ben Ali by several centuries.

The wider area also contains remains of historic sugar-production facilities dating from the period of the Saadi dynasty, reflecting the former economic importance of the Souss region.

16th-century fortress The remains of an older 16th-century sultanic fortress survive at Freija. The structure represents an earlier phase of fortified construction and political authority in the settlement and is distinct from the early 20th-century kasbah of Caïd Nasser Ben Ali.

According to the genealogical tradition preserved by the family of Caïd Nasser Ben Ali, the earlier fortress was associated with ancestors of the caïd. The exact identities of these ancestors and the complete line of descent between the 16th-century family and Caïd Nasser Ben Ali have not yet been established through published historical sources.

Family tradition also records the existence of successive fortified residences in Freija, including an earlier kasbah that was destroyed by fire and a later structure that replaced it. The chronology and identities of the individuals responsible for these earlier buildings require further documentary research.

Kasbah of Caïd Nasser Ben Ali One of the principal historic buildings of Freija is the Kasbah of Caïd Nasser Ben Ali.

The later kasbah was constructed in the early 20th century by Caïd Nasser Ben Ali, also referred to in historical accounts as Caïd Naceur. According to an account of the history of Freija, the construction was undertaken with the support of Thami El Glaoui, the influential Pasha of Marrakesh.

The kasbah occupied an elevated position overlooking the historic settlement and served as the residence and seat of authority of the caïd.

A historical account places Caïd Naceur's period of authority in Freija at approximately 1910–1920 and describes him as governing the settlement from the kasbah.

The title caïd (Arabic: قائد, qāʾid) traditionally referred to a local political and administrative authority in Morocco.

Caïd Nasser Ben Ali Caïd Nasser Ben Ali was an early 20th-century caïd associated with Freija. His fortified residence became one of the principal architectural landmarks of the settlement.

Published material concerning the history of Freija identifies Hicham (Icham) Toumi as a grandson of Caïd Naceur of Freija.

The caïd and his residence form an important part of the documented early 20th-century history of Freija.

Riad Freija The former Kasbah of Caïd Nasser Ben Ali was later restored and converted into Riad Freija.

The restoration adapted the historic caïdal residence for use as a hotel while retaining elements of the earlier structure.

A published hotel guide described Riad Freija as containing 29 rooms and three large suites. The suites occupied rooms formerly associated with the caïd. The hotel reportedly opened in 2007.

Architecture and fortifications Freija contains fortified structures belonging to different periods of Moroccan history.

The 16th-century sultanic fortress represents the older phase of the settlement's fortified architecture, while the Kasbah of Caïd Nasser Ben Ali represents the political and architectural landscape of the early 20th century.

The later kasbah occupied a prominent position overlooking Freija. Its location reflected both the status of the caïd and the administrative function of the residence.

The distinction between the different fortified structures is important, as the older fortress and the later caïdal kasbah were constructed several centuries apart.

Surrounding historical sites The wider area surrounding Freija contains archaeological and architectural remains connected with the economic history of the Souss Valley.

Among these are the remains of historic sugar-production facilities associated with the Saadi dynasty. Sugar cultivation and processing were economically significant in parts of southern Morocco during the Saadian period.

2023 earthquake Freija was affected by the major earthquake of 8 September 2023, which caused extensive destruction across parts of southern Morocco, including Taroudant Province.

Reports from Freija during 2024 documented damaged buildings, displaced residents and reconstruction efforts following the earthquake.

Historical significance Freija preserves architectural remains representing several distinct periods in the history of southern Morocco.

The remains of the 16th-century fortress represent an earlier period of fortified settlement and state authority, while the Kasbah of Caïd Nasser Ben Ali represents the system of local caïdal authority that existed in the region during the early 20th century.

The later restoration of the caïd's residence as Riad Freija provided the historic building with a modern function while preserving its association with the history of the village.
