Nerkattumseval is traditionally recognized as one of the 72 palaiyams of Madurai Nadu, already in existence in the days of Nagama Nayakar and his son Visvanatha Nayakar. It falls under the Sankarankovil taluk in Tenkasi District of Tamil Nadu.
