Algeria has qualified to the FIFA World Cup on five occasions, in 1982, 1986, 2010, 2014 and 2026. They have twice qualified for the knockout stage, reaching the round of 16 in 2014 before losing to Germany, and the round of 32 in 2026 before losing to Switzerland. Algeria nearly qualified to the second round of the 1982 World Cup after beating both West Germany and Chile; however, a controversial match between West Germany and Austria wound up eliminating the Algerians.
