The 1990 Lombard regional election took place on 6 and 7 May 1990. The 5th term of the Regional Council was chosen.

Electoral law The election was held under proportional representation with provincial constituencies where the largest remainder method with a Droop quota was used. To ensure more proportionality, remained votes and seats were transferred at regional level and calculated at-large.

Results The Christian Democracy party, which had been the leading political force in the region for twenty years, and the Communist Party lost half million votes each while the Lombard League, a new autonomist party led by Umberto Bossi, obtained a resounding victory, entering the Regional Council with 15 councillors, along with one for the Lombard Alliance, and becoming the second largest party in the region. Since that point the Lombard League became a stable political force in Lombardy.

After the election a cabinet led by the incumbent president Giuseppe Giovenzana was formed but, after the Tangentopoli crisis, it was replaced by a succession of governments which included both Lombard League and the former communist PDS. +PartyVotes%Seats+/−Christian Democracy1,784,63428.5625Lombard League1,183,49318.9415Italian Communist Party1,172,05918.7615Italian Socialist Party892,99814.2912±0Green List213,5293.422±0Italian Republican Party160,9852.582Italian Social Movement158,6142.542Pensioners' Party114,0161.821Rainbow Greens113,8241.821Italian Democratic Socialist Party103,1881.651Italian Liberal Party88,3081.411±0Lombard Alliance76,5161.221Proletarian Democracy73,4511.181Antiprohibitionists on Drugs62,3561.001Hunting Fishing Environment18,8340.300NewEcological List14,7740.240NewItalian Southerns' List11,1990.180NewItalian National Hunting Movement 5,2000.080NewTotal valid votes6,247,978100.0080Blank votes188,011Invalid votes (blank included)372,326Total6,620,304Registered voters & turnout7,258,35491.21Source: Ministry of the Interior
