Geology and relief The commune lies within the Pyrenees, a young mountain range formed during the Tertiary period roughly 40 million years ago, at the same time as the Alps. The rocks exposed on the commune's territory are sedimentary and date from the Mesozoic era. The cadastral area published by INSEE is 11.99 km², while the geographic area derived from the IGN's BD Topo database is 12.14 km². The relief is particularly steep, with a maximum elevation difference of 1,001 metres; altitude across the commune ranges from 481 to 1,482 metres.
Hydrography The commune lies within the Garonne drainage basin, part of the Adour-Garonne hydrographic basin. It is drained by the Ariège river, a side channel of the Ariège, the Lujat stream, the Vignes stream and a smaller watercourse, together forming a hydrographic network of 12 km in total length. The Ariège, 162.91 km long overall, rises in the commune of Porta and flows north, crossing the commune before joining the Garonne at Portet-sur-Garonne after passing through 56 communes.
Climate The commune's climate has been classified in various studies as an altered oceanic climate (2010, CNRS), and under the Köppen climate classification as Cfb, a temperate climate with cool summers and no dry season (for 1988–2017). Météo-France classifies the commune within the mountain or mountain-fringe climate type and the "Central Pyrenees" climate region, characterised by annual rainfall of 1,000 to 1,200 mm. For 1971–2000, the mean annual temperature was 11.4 °C, with average annual rainfall of 1,090 mm.
Protected areas and biodiversity An area of the commune, the "Quié de Lujat" (338.3 ha), is subject to a biotope protection order. The commune contains parts of three Natura 2000 sites: the "quiès calcaires de Tarascon-sur-Ariège et grotte de la Petite Caougno" (limestone outcrops with Mediterranean flora, protected under both the Habitats and Birds directives, and home to two pairs of Egyptian vultures and several pairs of golden eagles), and "Garonne, Ariège, Hers, Salat, Pique et Neste", a hydrographic network important for migratory fish, particularly salmon. The commune also lies within four zones classified under the ZNIEFF natural-heritage inventory, covering the course of the Ariège and the limestone cliffs of the upper Ariège valley and the Tarascon basin.
Urban classification As of 1 January 2024, Ornolac-Ussat-les-Bains is classified as a rural commune with dispersed housing under INSEE's density scale. It belongs to the urban unit of Tarascon-sur-Ariège, an intra-departmental agglomeration of nine communes, of which it is a suburb, and lies outside the sphere of influence of any larger city.
Toponymy
History As early as 1771 the site was recognised for its beneficial mineral springs, but it was Baron Louis de Fraxine of Ornolac who developed the thermal-bathing trade at Ussat-les-Bains. Notable visitors who came to take the waters included Louis Bonaparte, King of Holland and brother of Napoleon I, and the poet Alphonse de Lamartine.
By 1845 Ussat-les-Bains was drawing large numbers of visitors, and the Grandes Thermes, today a listed building, became a fashionable destination. The baths remained the property of the hospices of Pamiers until 1982. Today they are run by private owners; the spa is known for waters said to have antispasmodic, sedative, balancing and remineralising properties, and treats primarily stress-related psychosomatic conditions as well as certain neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease.
Lujat (also spelled Lugeat) is a former village, now attached to the commune, that was inhabited from the Middle Ages onward. Recorded as abandoned and then reoccupied, it still had a church and residents as late as 1914. A botanical survey of the area in 1924 described the village, then already ruined, as having "only a ruined chapel, two dilapidated buildings and a sheepfold" remaining of its former 10 to 12 houses. This "dead village" is said to be unique in the Ariège Pyrenees, and today survives only as a ruin.
Politics and administration The commune is a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Tarascon, an inter-communal structure with its own taxation powers, created on 21 July 1994 and seated in Tarascon-sur-Ariège. Administratively, Ornolac-Ussat-les-Bains falls within the arrondissement of Foix. For departmental elections, it belongs to the canton of Haute-Ariège, and for legislative elections, to the first constituency of Ariège.

Agriculturally, the commune forms part of the small agricultural region known as the "Pyrenean Region". In 2010, the dominant agricultural activity was cattle-raising for meat; three farms were recorded in the commune, with a utilised agricultural area of 21 ha, down from eight farms in 1988.

Sights and heritage
The commune's built heritage includes one building listed as a monument historique: the Fraxine thermal baths, listed in 1991. Other notable sites include: the Fraxine thermal baths at Ussat-les-Bains, a long row of glazed arcades built against the mountainside, now disused as bathing activity has shifted to two nearby hotels; the former Sainte-Germaine thermal establishment on the far bank of the Ariège near the Grotte de Lombrives, now ruined and overgrown; the historic thermal park, which retains tennis courts and the base of a now-vanished bandstand; the Grotte de Lombrives, whose entrance lies just across the commune boundary in Ussat, and which contains the largest publicly accessible cave chamber in the region, said to be large enough to hold Notre-Dame de Paris; the Grotte de Fontanet, which preserves hand- and footprints in clay along with engravings and cave paintings attributed to the Middle or Upper Magdalenian; the Grotte des Églises, whose northern entrance, once walled, formed a medieval fortified refuge (spoulga); the Grotte du Grand-Père, decorated with Iron Age engravings; the Romanesque church of Saint-Pierre de Barry d'en Haut, listed in the Base Mérimée; the ruined chapel of Lugeat (or Lujat); the chapel of Saint-Martin at Ussat-les-Bains.
The local heritage association Patrimoine et histoire de l'Ornolacois has produced a slideshow, Ornolac-Ussat-les-Bains à la Belle Époque, on the town's history.
