Leben und Wirken Stephen A. Mitchell studierte Skandinavistik und Ethnologie an der University of California, Berkeley und der Universität Lund. In Berkeley erwarb er den Bachelorgrad. Seine Magisterprüfung legte er 1977 an der University of Minnesota ab. Dort promovierte er 1980 zum Ph.D. Seither arbeitet Mitchell als Hochschullehrer an der Harvard University, wo er seit 1987 eine Professur innehatte. Eine enge Beziehung besteht mit der Universität Aarhus. Dort lehrte er 2009 als Gastprofessor und erhielt in Anerkennung seiner Forschungsarbeit über das mittelalterliche Skandinavien und die Wikingerzeit 2015 die Ehrendoktorwürde dieser Hochschule.
