Leben Er promovierte 1999 an der medizinischen Fakultät der Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Der Titel seiner Doktorarbeit lautete Somatoforme Dissoziation: Phänomene, Messung und theoretische Aspekte. Danach arbeitete er im Trauma Center of Mental Health Care Drenthe, Assen, The Nederlands und diagnostizierte und behandelte dort schwer traumatisierte Patienten. Er war auch wissenschaftlicher Berater bei Clienia Littenheid (Schweiz) und ist Co-Direktor des Psychotraumatology Institute Europe.
Werk Seine empirische und experimentelle Forschung bezieht sich auf die Psychologie und Psychobiologie von chronischer Traumatisierung und Dissoziation. Zusammen mit Onno van der Hart und Kathy Steele entwickelte er ein Modell der strukturellen Dissoziation; dabei teilt er die Persönlichkeit traumatisierter Menschen in einen „Anscheinend Normalen Persönlichkeitsanteil“ (ANP) ein, der den Alltag bewältigt, und einen „Emotionalen Persönlichkeitsanteil“ (EP), der in traumatischen Überlebensreaktionen (wie Flucht oder Kampf) gefangen bleibt. Er wies nach, dass sich somatoforme Dissoziation nicht nur psychisch (z. B. Gedächtnisverlust), sondern auch stark körperlich äußert (z. B. durch sensorische Ausfälle oder psychogene Schmerzen). Zur Erfassung von Dissoziationstendenzen entwickelte er den Fragebogen Somatoform Dissociation Questionnaire (SDQ-20). Er bildet zudem Therapeuten in der enaktiven Traumatherapie aus. Seine Methode betrachtet Patient und Therapeut als zwei interagierende Organismus-Umwelt-Systeme, die gemeinsam neue Handlungsweisen und Bedeutungen „tanzend“ erarbeiten.
