Michael Gilsenan (* 6. Februar 1940 in London) ist ein britischer Ethnologe, Orientalist und Hochschullehrer.Michael Gilsenan. Leben und Wirken Michael Gilsenan studierte Orientalistik an der University of Oxford und legte dort 1963 die Bachelorprüfung ab. Anschließend folgte 1964 die Diplomprüfung und 1967 die Promotion zum Ph.D. auf dem Gebiet der Sozialanthropologie bei Edward E. Evans-Pritchard in Oxford. Hierfür betrieb er von 1964 bis 1966 Feldforschungen in Ägypten über den Sufismus, gefolgt von Feldforschungen im Libanon (1971/72) und später in verschiedenen Regionen der arabischen Diaspora. Als Hochschullehrer arbeitete er von 1973 bis 1984 am University College London. 1985 wechselte er auf eine Professur an der University of Oxford (Magdalen College). Seit 1995 lehrte er als Professor an der New York University und baute dort ein neues „Department of Middle Eastern Studies“ auf. Im Jahre 2020 trat er endgültig in den Ruhestand. Gilsenan veröffentlichte vor allem über den Islam im Mittleren Osten.
