Hemerocampa leucostigma is een vlinder uit de familie spinneruilen (Erebidae), onderfamilie donsvlinders (Lymantriinae). De wetenschappelijke naam van deze soort is, als Phalaena leucostigma, voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1797 door James Edward Smith.Smith, J.E. (1797). The natural history of the rarer lepidopterous insects of Georgia: including their systematic characters, the particulars of their several metamorphoses, and the plants on which they feed. Collected from the observation of Mr. John Abbot, many years resident in that country, deel 2: 157 en plaat LXXIX. Noot: John Abbott, soms genoemd als medeauteur van de naam, was geen auteur van het boek en dus ook niet van de naam. Gearchiveerd op 25 juli 2023. De soort wordt door sommige auteurs in het geslacht Orgyia geplaatst.
De soort komt voor in Noord-Amerika en kan daar soms het slachtoffer worden van Entomophaga maimaiga een entomopathogene schimmelsoort, die als biologische bestrijding van de invasieve plakker gebruikt wordt. thumb|left|de rups
