Brevoortia is een geslacht van straalvinnige vissen uit de familie van haringen (Clupeidae). Het geslacht is voor het eerst wetenschappelijk beschreven in 1861 door Theodore Gill. "Synopsis of the Subfamily of Clupeinae, with descriptions of new Genera." Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia vol. 13 (1861), blz. 37.
Het geslacht is genoemd naar James Carson Brevoort (1818-1887), "de bekende ichtyoloog uit New York".
