Biografie Mary Roach studeerde psychologie aan de Middletown Wesleyan University tot 1981. Daarna schreef ze columns, artikelen en persberichten, als freelance of voor werkgevers, waaronder de dierentuin van San Francisco.
Van 1996 tot 2005 maakte ze deel uit van "The Grotto", een schrijversgemeenschap in San Francisco. Andere schrijvers in deze groep motiveerden haar ertoe om haar eerste boek te schrijven, dat uiteindelijk in 2003 verscheen.
Roach is getrouwd en woont in Oakland.
