De wetenschappelijke naam van dit geslacht werd voor het eerst geldig gepubliceerd in 1802 door Pierre André Latreille. Histoire naturelle, générale et particulière des crustacés et des insectes. De geslachtsnaam is afgeleid van het Grieks en betekent zoveel als "mest[onthos]-eter[phagos]".
De kleine tot middelgrote kevers hebben een gedrongen, ovaal lichaam met een dikke thorax die breder is dan hij lang is. Ze zijn meestal matzwart van kleur. De kop en/of het pronotum van de mannetjes is voorzien van stekel- of hoornvormige uitsteeksels.
Hoornmestkevers vormen een zeer groot geslacht met wereldwijd meer dan 2100 soorten. De typesoort is Onthophagus taurus (oorspronkelijk Scarabeus taurus Schreber, 1759), de soort die Latreille in 1802 als voorbeeld aanhaalde.
